LEWISVILLE, Texas, June 8 (PRNewswire) -- Serenity Systems International (SSI) has announced an open (public) beta program for its Serenity Virtual Station (SVISTA) product, a virtual machine application for Intel based PCs. The software being tested runs on Linux, Microsoft Windows, and IBM's OS/2. A FreeBSD version is planned for later this year.
SVISTA supports running of different operating systems, or multiple instances of the same operating system, as "guest desktops" inside the virtual machine. This provides the user with the ability to access multiple desktops on the same computer at the same time.
"We learned a great deal from our recently completed Early Support Program", said Bob St.John of SSI. "And now it is time to take the program to the next level. An Open Beta, available to the public, will teach us more about our products. And we expect to learn a great deal more about our users and customers and their product requirements through this program, as well."
Though the beta program is structured to support individual users, SSI will also support evaluation programs with qualified Channel Partners and enterprise commercial accounts. According to St.John, "We believe there is significant value in our terminal services product. Applications which deploy and provide access to the SVISTA virtual machine to users across a network. However, we see these products, and the Titan management product family, as services offerings, not as 'shrink-wrap' products. So, we are interested in testing with in-house IT groups and fee service consultants."
The terminal services products deploy SVISTA to a local workstation or provide users with remote access to a desktop running on the terminal services system. This can be accomplished on Linux, providing access to Microsoft Windows, OS/2, or even Linux desktops. It can even be used to extend the functionality of Citrix implementations.
Presentations providing more information on this functionality are available here. The German magazine, freeX, recently published an article about SVISTA. The German text of the article is available here
Organizations providing fee technical services and commercial accounts interested in evaluation programs should send contact and background information to info@serenity-systems.com

Visitors often ask us where to order CDs with free eComStation software? We don't know.. That's why we are searching for user who will start creation and distribution of such CDs in Russia. To stimulate software development it's necessary create "Russian software collection", "Developer's collection", etc.
We are ready support this distributor; consult him about ELI usage (eco-logical installer) for comfortable software deployment from CD.

Today we are beginning limited testing of the first Release Candidate (RC1) for eComStation 1.2, planned for release later this month. This will include an updated Application Pack and software subscription offerings for both products.
One of the Application Pack 1.2 components, Serenity Virtual Station/2 (SVISTA/2), the OS/2 - eComStation host virtual machine, will be part of a public beta planned to begin by mid-May. Users interested in this product should either participate in the public beta, *or* order the Application Pack. Ordering the Application Pack 1.2 will automatically include participation in the SVISTA/2 beta.
More information about these projects is in the eComstation Roadmap available from www.ecomstation.com

My team is no longer focused on Mozilla for OS/2.
While I continue to do some work on it as a hobby, there is basically no OS/2 development work going on with Mozilla.
I'm hoping there are developers out there who want to help work on the OS/2 port of Mozilla.
If there are, speak up.
Please post all responses to the Mozilla OS/2 support group.

VNC stands for Virtual Network Computing. It is remote control software which allows you to view and interact with one computer (the "server") using a simple program (the "viewer") on another computer anywhere on the Internet. The two computers don't even have to be the same type, so for example you can use VNC to view an office Linux machine on your Windows PC at home. VNC is freely and publicly available and is in widespread active use by millions throughout industry, academia and privately.
Today we present full-value VNC-server, which allows control computers with eCS installed (we recommend use java-web-browser to view the eComStation Desktop).
|
VNC allows use slow modem connection to control remote system.

Contact Eugene Romanenko if you are writing an overview about VNC configuration and security.

Some weeks ago www.os2world.com started the campaign. In result, many developers published their source codes.
Now we repeat the original message again.
There is many OS/2 software around the Internet that had been abandon by it's authors. Many software are great products that are still used by many OS/2 users and software that deserves to have further enhancements.
The idea will be in a polite way to ask the developers of this abandon OS/2 software to release the source code of it. Many of they don't code anymore under OS/2 and don't care anymore about it and will have no problem releasing the source code. The benefits of open sourcing their code will be that other OS/2 developers can learn from the code and possible continue their projects.
I had a good experience asking developers to open source their software. I started some years ago the OS/2 gaming site and I also tried to contact the OS/2 abandoned games developers. Much of the developers don't care anymore about the game and gave me freely the source code for their games and let me choose to license to be distribute with them. (You can check out the open sourced OS/2 games).
So if you want to help me on this campaign, once you find a OS/2 abandoware program the steps will be:
- Ask the developer their permission to turn their software Open Source.
- Ask the developer which license does he prefer to use with his Software. There are several license that the developer can choose. If the developer don't care which license to use you can always suggest the GNU GPL which is very common with Linux and will keep further development of that software to also be open source.
- Get for the source code
- Bundle the Source, license text file and the binaries in a single zip file or WarpIn file. If you don't have time you can send to me source code and I will bundle it with the binaries.
- Distribute the binaries and the source code. There are several ways to distribute a file on the OS/2 community. The most common is to upload the file to hobbes OS/2 Archive. Check the upload instructions and policies.
- Announce that the program is now released as Open Source. We want other OS/2 users and developers to get interest on it. Lets post every software we can turn open source on the main OS/2 news site. The most easy way will be to send a news using the OS2World.com News Submition Form.
Remember that if you need help distributing the files, or bundle them in a single file you can contact me. Many OS/2 (and ex-OS/2) developers don't have time and will send you the files for you to give them some order. I have no problem helping on anything I can, like packaging the files, distribuite them and making the announcements to the OS/2 community.
