ViaVoice released to Open Source

2004-09-23 13:24:18 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [VOICENWS]

IBM has released parts (the back end) of its ViaVoice product to open source to the Apache Foundation and to the Eclipse organization.

IBM OS/2 VoiceType is somehow "older" technology requiring the "speaker" to use short pausings for the system to recognize well. In contrary, what IBM is somehow giving away is "ViaVoice" - a newer technology that was available for Windoze only and uses "continuous speech" recognition - thus "real" speech.

Porting applications Linux - eComStation

2004-09-04 09:24:12 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [www.osnews.com]

IBM developerWorks hosts information *which may be used* by professional developers who are porting Linux software to OS/2.

  • The first article contains reference information about threads, mutexes, and semaphores.
  • The second talks about Memory management, IPC, and file handling.
  • The third talks about Timer and DLL calls.

Linux is "a country of the third world" which imports raw materials and cheap labour power to eCS. So, you can use this information as a reference for undertaking any migration activity. "The tips and caveats should help to simplify your migration design".

Macromedia Flash 7, sequel

2004-06-15 15:32:49 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [www.os2world.com, Kim & Martin, OS2WORLD]

We just got this reply from Macromedia. They have no problem on licensing Flash Player for OS/2. But they understand that nobody has port it (ver 7) to OS/2, and Macromedia is not holding back this port.

"Kim & Martin, OS2WORLD

Your news post "Ask Macromedia to allow Flash 7 for OS/2 - 6/11/04 @ 04:34"
has certainly caught our attention. And while I understand that there are
many people who would like to have the Flash Player 7 for OS/2.
Flash Player 7 for OS/2 does not exist. Macromedia has not created Flash
Player 7 for OS/2, and we are not preventing any third party from releasing
it. None of our licensees have ported Flash Player 7 to OS/2.

I certainly understand that folks are frustrated, especially since they
think we are holding something from them. I want to personally assure you
we are not holding back the Flash Player product from the OS/2 community.
