I design, code and test extreme high
end wed servers using OS/2 (currently
Warp Server for e-Business and eCS).
These are multi-threaded, session
oriented web servers that provide
access to large databases, and each
one is highly tailored to the needs of
a specific customer. If you are going
to run Linux, you might as well run
Windows NT/2000 because Windows NT
is nothing more than the old DOS
Windows running on SCO Xenix as its
base operating system instead of
MS-DOS. Linux and Windows NT both
suffer from the traditional
klunkiness associated with their UNIX
origins. We can't use them for what
I do because we need an operating
system kernel that is specifically
optimized to the hardware architecture
of the CPU to get the kind of
performance that we need; that is,
serving one to five million web pages
per day from each Athlon 550.
Granted, each web server I build costs
about $250,000 and takes two man-years
to construct, but for some businesses,
this is a small price compared to the
profits they reap by doing it.
